About the region
Desná v Jizerských horách
The town of Desná v Jizerských horách lies in the attractive landscape of the Jizera Mountains. It is located in the valley around the Bílá and Černá Desná Rivers and the surroundings slopes. The place was founded by Count Des Fours in 1691. The town underwent considerable growth in the second half of the 19th century when a very well-known spa was run in Potočná. There is now a park in its place, a park dominated by the architecturally interesting Riedel Villa, built in 1895 by local glassmaking entrepreneur Josef Riedel. This is now the cultural centre of the town and plays host to exhibitions and the work of prominent artists. It is also home to the town library. On the other side is an imposing tomb that also belonged to the Riedel family. This is currently undergoing reconstruction. One of the most interesting features in Desná is its "Protržená přehrada" (Burst Dam), whose remains remind us of the terrible disaster that occurred here on 18th September 1916. 62 people lost their lives on this day and many others were left without a roof over their heads or without work. There is a commemorative stone along the way, brought here by the rush of water on that fateful day. This has since been provided with a plaque to commemorate the misfortune of the past. Winter sees Desná become a resort for skiers. One of the most often used ski-tows, one which also offers floodlit night-time skiing, is only short walk from the town centre in the area known as Parlament. There is another ski-tow at Černá Říčka, whilst the re-opening of the Křížek ski-tow, which is to be connected to the expansive ski complex at Tanvaldský Špičák, is planned for the near future.
