Botanic gardens and ZOO

Liberec Zoo

The oldest zoo in the Czech Republic and one that has been crowned with a number of breeding successes. Only here have they been able to rear young white tigers and golden takins.

The zoo in Liberec is also rightly proud of its breeding of beasts of prey, which has also noted a number of successes. There is also a marvellous tropical house, in which you can see a number of tropical animals and birds. The feeding of the seals, an integral part of the zoo, is something not to be forgotten in a hurry.

The Botanic Gardens in Liberec

The Liberec Botanic Gardens and their rich collections mean that the gardens are among the best in Europe. The history of the place stretches back to 1876 and is associated with the enterprising Friends of Nature Club.

The gardens took on greater significance in the middle of the 1950s and soon won international renown under the management of Pavel Smrž. Notable features include the largest water lily in the world (giant water lily), which has regularly blossomed here during the summer since 1956, a large collection of orchids and cacti, an extensive rock garden, a camellia of almost three hundred years of age, and freshwater and salt water aquariums, the first in the country. The unique collection was also recently increased to include a world-renowned collection of carnivorous plants.
