Frýdlant Castle
The castle in Frýdlant was founded in the middle of the 13th century, the first owners being the Ronovec family. The first Renaissance-style building work, influenced by the so-called Saxon or Lusatian style of architecture and its frequent returns to the Gothic style, was undertaken by the Bibrstein family that held the demesne from the end of the 1270s until 1551. The original appearance of the Gothic castle has not been maintained in full. Today we see the castle as a mighty two-storied structure around a small and irregular courtyard dominated by a large cylindrical tower. In 1801 the Clam-Gallas family opened part of the castle and certain collections to the public and so it was that Frýdlant became the oldest castle museum. The current exhibits present the chateau anew. Two of the chateau wings are accessible, as is the chapel and its valuable contents. There is also a tour of a unique armoury and a wonderful children's room.
