New Town Hall

In the summer months you can visit a 51-metre-high lookout tower in the centre of Jablonec nad Nisou. After climbing 250 stairs you will reach a square tower in the Town Hall building where you will be offered a beautiful view not only of the town but also the Jizerské Mountains and the Ještěd Ridge. The Town Hall has been standing here for more than 70 years now, so a couple of words about its beginning. The Old town hall (today on Dolní [Lower] Square) started to be insufficient for the needs of the growing town, so at the beginning of the 20th century the town representatives were trying to find a suitable place for a new town hall. However, it was not until 1928 that it was decided that the new building would be placed on the square called Alter Markt. In the same year the town council advertised a competition to find a design. 177 proposals from all over Central Europe were reviewed. The winning project was by the Liberec architect and builder Karl Winter. Construction started at the beginning of 1931 and the foundation was finished in November of that year. The whole building was finished at the end of 1932 and in January 1933 the first meeting of the town council took place. The total building area is 2428m2 and the budget was 22,5 mil crowns. 1900 Czech workers laboured in the construction. Today the town hall is the home of the municipality and the tourist information office.
