Our tips

Slovanka

It was the first iron lookout tower in Bohemia and the first lookout tower in the Jizerské Mountains, built above Maxov on what was called Seibt's hill. A design by Viennese company Waagner was chosen. It was an 11-metre cast metal structure, which had been standing at an exhibition organized by Vienna. The construction itself was very quick. Soon after the first building permits were issued one bricklayer built a 3-metre high stone bedding in a short time. Then a steel worker with two assistants erected the structure of cast metal parts in 17 days. 14th August 1887 the inauguration ceremony took place, attended by 5000 people. Lightning caused a fire which destroyed the original lodge near the tower in 1895 and only in 1928 was the new one built. The lookout tower was reconstructed and since 2000 it has been open. Although the view is not very far, the tower itself is far more interesting as a valuable and unique technical monument. It is the oldest iron lookout tower in Bohemia.
