The steepest railway line in Bohemia - absolutely unique!
.avif)
Currently there is a lockout on the Tanvald - Kořenov line due to reconstruction, it will last until 31 October 2025. Trains are replaced by buses, including wheel transport. But you can ride historic steam trains between Kořenov and Harrachov.
An unusual cog railway runs from Tanvald through Desná and Kořenov until Harrachov. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is one of the last surviving “normal gauge” cog tracks in Europe. At the same time, it is the steepest railway line in Bohemia. In the section from Tanvald to Kořenov, the track has a slope of up to 58 permile for almost seven kilometres. It is for this reason that in critical sections of the climb the Abt gear was designed, consisting of two gear strips placed between the tracks, fed by the gears of the locomotive and fitted into the teeth of the gear.
