Discover the Stones of the Disappeared — a tribute to those who disappeared forever from the places where they once lived during World War II

Liberec

At first glance, perhaps unobtrusive brass cubes embedded in the pavement, but with a huge story. The so-called Stones of the Disappeared — Stolperstein — commemorating the individual victims of the Nazi regime who lived in the same streets we walk through today.

They bear the names of those who never returned home again. Each stone is a personal and humbling memory — in order to read it, one must bow to it. Before the war, Liberec had a large Jewish community numbering almost 1,500 people. After the war, only 37 returned. The stones of the disappeared are such a quiet but powerful testimony to history that it has its place right in the cobblestones in the streets of the city.
