Meanders of Smědá and Dubový Pond

natural targets

An unobtrusive river that is home to a variety of endangered species - plants and animals

Višňová a Černousy

In the northern part of Frýdlant, the river Smídda meanders quietly and calmly. Its meanders with blind shoulders and gravel flats in the cadastre of Višňová and Černousy municipalities were declared a nature reserve in 1998, which has an area of 137 hectares and includes Dubový Pond, an important ornithological site. The pond is one of the largest and oldest bodies of water in the Frýdlant promontory. Historically, its existence is attested in the 16th century. On the dam of the pond grow massive summer and red oaks, after which the pond is named. A number of protected bird species nest here, such as the great reed warbler, the kingfisher, the ash crane and many others. The river Smída is a demonstration of an element that, although it seems completely calm, can turn into a stormy and dangerous phenomenon in a moment, especially when the mountains are hit by more persistent rainy weather.
